Interview with José Ángel Olivas on the ethical and social dilemmas of AI

Our colleague José Ángel Olivas took part on 6 May 2026 in the programme Castilla-La Mancha Despierta on CMM. During the interview, which took the form of a discussion with Valeria Aragón, vice-president of the Castilla-La Mancha AI Association, José Ángel analysed the ethical and social dilemmas posed by emerging technologies.

Taking the incidents involving robotaxis in San Francisco as a starting point, he warned of the risks of introducing autonomous vehicles into public spaces without careful consideration.

He also expressed concern at the rise in China of so-called "dead bots" (digital replicas of deceased people), warning of the legal vacuum surrounding this practice and the danger of commodifying human grief through AI.

Furthermore, the debate addressed the impact of algorithmic discrimination and bias in processes such as recruitment. José Ángel argued for the need to carry out thorough audits under the new European regulation (AI Act) to prevent these systems from perpetuating historical inequalities.

Finally, in the field of creativity and generative art, José Ángel was emphatic in stating that AI lacks genuine originality because it merely imitates patterns from the past; he therefore urged us to draw a clear distinction between human and algorithmic creations in order to prevent a decline in our cultural standards.
